ABOUT

Mount Royal University hosted its first virtual Career Expo in order to help students and alumni get career-ready in a post-COVID world. From Jan. 25 – 27, 2021, students could network with experts, discover job opportunities and explore new career possibilities in exciting events and sessions.

THE APPROACH

As part of the build-up to MRU's Career Expo, my team and I wanted to provide students and alumni with more information to better understand the Innovation & Entrepreneurship landscape. From our brainstorming and discussion, questions arouse:

  • • How many jobs are currently available in each of these categories/paths?
  • • What industries are most active?
  • • What is the average salary?
  • • How do the MRU courses students are taking align to the various career paths?

To address these type of questions, we developed a basic MVP tool called Joblinkie.

(The IE at the end stands for Innovation & Entrepreneurship)

KEY FEATURES

  • Job categories/career paths - We created six job profiles, including sales generation, advisory, product management, general management, ecosystem development and business development. We described the key skills and 'nice to haves' in each role, while also aligning to current MRU Entrepreneurship courses. This is a basic version of a "skill tree" for students and a mechanism to drive registration for courses in alignment with the profile.

  • Analytics/Dashboard - Includes spread across key industries, the number of available jobs, and average salary. These are key input information for students as they embark on their careers and helps align interests such as industry.

  • Job Board - A repository of available jobs in the market aligned to the six career paths. Important to note that the jobs showcased are not exhaustive, but they do – however – provide an indicative perspective on the available jobs in the current market, industry, location, etc. for students/recent graduates.

POST-LAUNCH

Over 1300 students, alumni, faculty and community guests joined the MRU Virtual Career Expo from January 25 to 27, including over 100 representatives from 40 companies, and 115 guest speakers.

In only two days and without any marketing/SEO, Joblinkie acquired over 1,200 views, 100 unique users, and an average engagement time of 2 minutes and 51 seconds.
